Dear 16 year old me…

After flicking through old photos recently I came to the realisation that it has been 8 years since I was 16. Time really has flown by! I remember my final year at secondary school like it was yesterday. I am probably one of the few people that actually miss it! After recently being overwhelmed with my busy adult life I thought it would be interesting to look back 8 years. If I could go back in time I’d look at life extremely differently and I’d definitely appreciate it a hell of a lot more. Here are three things I wish I could have told 16 year old me.

#1 – Appreciate – At 16 I didn’t really   appreciate the people I had around me as much as I should have. At school I saw my friends every  day without fail and didn’t think twice about it. Now to get myself and my five other close school friends in the same room at the same time is almost impossible. I used to struggle to understand why people a little older than me didn’t have much time to spend with friends and now I completely get it. I would tell myself to appreciate the time I had with friends on a regular basis as spending quality time with them now is sometimes near impossible when you have friends living on the other side of the world!

#2 Be an individual – When I was 16 and at school I did follow the crowd sometimes by trying to fit in with certain trends etc. I would say I wasn’t too bad however I definitely think it’s important to stay true to yourself. Looking back now I would tell myself to not try and conform to anything and stick to being me because years later it really won’t matter!

#3 – Enjoy it! – When I was growing up I used to stress (well I still worry and stress!) about every little detail. I would tell myself not to panic about stupid things and actually enjoy growing up. I do actually miss school because it was a lot more carefree than I realised at the time and I wish I could go back and enjoy it more. I was in such a hurry to grow up and I’d do anything to go back and have a nice 9-3 day, see my friends 5 days a week and not have bills to pay!

16 year old me and my friends! (2 of which are still two of my best friends today – and are both in different countries right now!)
